When we see depictions of the Mayan goddess Ixchel, we invariably imagine her as a woman with certain characteristics, either as a young woman or an old woman. However, in this painting, I wanted to represent her most characteristic symbols: the rabbit, which symbolizes fertility; the serpent, which can symbolize both catastrophe and medicine; water; and the colors of the cardinal directions of the Mayan universe: white, red, black, and yellow. In this way, the colors of the work represent the meaning of her name: "rainbow woman."

With this watercolor, I seek to highlight its less catastrophic and more interesting and kind side: the fertile, wise and abundant, feminine side.
