 The Mayan maiden Nicté Ha (Water Flower) and Prince Chak Tzitzib loved each other, but their tragic love ended with the death of the beautiful young woman. The prince then prayed to the gods for help. The water god transformed her into a water lily, and the bird god, in turn, transformed him into a red cardinal. Since then, the cardinal sings to his beloved at dawn in the cenote where they met.


 This watercolor reflects, through symbols, the story of this legendary love: the cardinal perches on the young woman, protecting her and the delicate flower that represents her.
